Invest another $120.00 into a competitor's product that pays for itself in 2 weeks.Īnd that is why we are leaving Roku-it simply costs too much money to operate. Change my lifestyle to fit the glaring oversight of not including an inactivity timer in this device.ģ. $12.00 a night equals $360.00 a month in additional charges for using a Roku that will not, on its own, stop streaming.Ģ. with 8 hours of such costing as much as a trip to the local Ciniplex. That means 1 hour of unwatched HD video is a waste of $1.50. Every hour that I go over my bandwidth cap of 350GB of data per month is $10.00 per 50 GB. Oh, and that screen saver that looks like an old analog flip clock that costs a buck? I can live without that as well.īut, every hour of time that my Roku does not shut off due to inactivity? That is $1.50. Heck, most of them were on my PS3! So, no, maybe only Roku offers the "Gator Wrastlin' Channel" with 24 hour feeds of people wrastlin' alligaotrs, but you know what? I am willing to bet I can live without that. But you know what, I am willing to bet the 12 channels that I have selected are on each and every other unit out there. Yes, I know Roku has a larger channel/app selection than the others. Yet despite the fact it would cost almost nothing to implement, and would save users a lot of money, Roku has decided to leave it out. A quick Google search shows that this is a very hot topic amongst consumers. And yet, despite the fact it is a feature found in the vast majority of devices out there, Roku has left it out. It can be implemented in about 20-40 lines of code.Īmazon Fire TV has it. It costs about 1/100th of a penny per unit to implement becauseĥ. They were economically friendly to the environment.Ĥ. They were economically friendly to the consumer.Ģ. The manufacturers of these devices installed these features for several important reasons:ġ. You could set the timers to suit your whim. Indeed, you could turn the feature on, or off, to suit your whim. The three TVs I have purchased in the last decade all had it. The purpose of the inactivity timer is to automatically conserve power, and bandwidth, when the device is not being used. Hopefully, so far, this is not news to you.Īs a result of people falling asleep, and the fact that electricity costs money, and now for most people, bandwidth costs money, leaving your streaming media running all night while you sleep is a waste of money.Įvery video related device I have purchased, for the last 10 years, has had built into it, an inactivity timer. A lot of people watch TV in bed, and since they are in bed for the purpose of falling asleep, they tend to fall asleep. Your normal activities do not represent the way the world works, nor the way it is "supposed" to work. Let me explain something that you do not seem to understand-you are not the world.

Threat? That is as much a threat as saying, "Unless Chrysler installs a feature that allows me to to stop the engine of their cars, I am going to have to switch to a another make." What's up with all the veiled "well if Roku doesn't do this, I guess I'll have to use something else" threats lately? Good luck finding anything with anything near the selection of Roku. I think it is time I looked at other products. Heck, my DVR from 10 years ago had one.Īnd, I did not know you could set continuous play off for Netflix, but that still doesn't resolve the issue with any other channels, as it merely means our TV will be on all night showing the screen saver. This is the first streaming device I have seen without one. Channel owners can put a "sleep timer" into their channels if they choose, but the Roku doesn't have one for the whole system.
